Impact of HARIT PRAYAS on Panchyats…@Sagar

At Kadatha village of Rehli block (30km from Sagar) there was no provision from the government to work out for the betterment of the marginal farmers for improving their field production through means of providing them any fixed assets at cheaper cost. Prior to the threshing machines farmers used an implement called 'flail' to simply beat the grain with sticks or ropes to knock the seeds from the stalks. But this was a back-breaking work and was of low productivity. Threshing machines were designed for rapidly removing the husks from grain.

It was in this month that the government had a need assessment done to work out a plan for the farmers here. Starting from Kadatha village the provision of Yantra Dhooth was made (a machine for the marginal farmers) to plough in their land that supports both threshing and ploughing. The issue was raised by the farmers in the Gram Sabha held last month which was also attended by the
cluster coordinator, to bring out the need that they needed some support from the government in enhancing their input in the field. It was on this demand made that the panchayat representatives made efforts for approaching the block (Janpath) and asking for the provisions set forth in supporting these marginal farmers. Our coordinators were continuously at force with the Sarpanchs to bring out a solution for it.

It was in the month of September that the machine was launched and made available to few farmers on trail basis. With improvements in design and efficiency, threshing machines became progressively more common and the hand flail was gradually consigned to history. The machines could be driven by wind or water power, or by horses, but the steam powered thresher became the most familiar sight. They were eventually replaced in the middle decades of the twentieth century by the combine harvester which both harvests and threshes the crop in the field in a single operation.
